Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero will announce his retirement from football this week, after an assessment of his heart condition, and the 33-year-old Argentine will bring down the curtain on his career, Spanish newspaper El Periodico reported on Monday.

Barcelona refused to comment, and it was not possible to reach the player's agent and his friends to confirm this news, but some sources close to him confirmed to Reuters that the club is preparing for the farewell party on Wednesday.

The former Manchester City and Atletico Madrid striker joined Barcelona on a free transfer before the start of the season and the Argentine striker received medical assistance on the field after complaining of chest pain during the 1-1 draw with Alaves in the league in late October and was taken to hospital.

Barcelona then announced that Aguero would be out for at least three months, after assessing his condition.

"Aguero underwent an evaluation and diagnosis by Doctor Josep Brugada. He will not be able to play for three months, and his response to treatment will be evaluated to determine the recovery period," Barcelona said in a statement in November.

Aguero has participated in five matches in all competitions so far with Barcelona and scored one goal in the derby against Real Madrid after he started the season with a calf injury.
