Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo announced today, Wednesday, that Brazilian football legend Pele was admitted to hospital for treatment of a colon cancerous tumor.

The hospital said Pele, 81, a three-time World Cup winner, underwent surgery to remove a colon polyp last September and spent about a month in hospital, and that he needed to undergo chemotherapy.

According to a hospital statement, Pele is now "continuing" his cancer treatment.

The football legend said on his Twitter account last month that he was "fine" and feeling better "every day".

Pele is the most prominent player in the history of Brazilian football, and one of the legends of the game throughout its history.
