All family members were threatened with a knife and Mark Cavendish was attacked by the robbers.

According to the police, no one was seriously injured, but they were very shaken.

They were robbed of an expensive bag and two watches.

"No one should have to experience this type of violence and threat, least of all in their home where everyone should feel safe," says Cavendish.

Cavendish returned to the world elite last season and touched, among other things, Eddy Merckx's record of most stage victories in the Tour de France.

He is currently injured after a crash during a competition in Ghent, Belgium, earlier in November.
