Miedema and Martens have a chance with women

The Golden Ball has been awarded to the women since 2018.

The shortlist consists of twenty names, including Vivianne Miedema and Lieke Martens.

Miedema was voted world football player of the year earlier on Monday in an election by the BBC.

The Arsenal striker became the all-time top scorer in the English women's competition this year.

She also finished at the top of the top scorers list at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, where she stranded with the Orange Women in the quarterfinals.

Martens had a top year with FC Barcelona by winning the Champions League.

She also won the championship and the national cup with the Spanish top club.

No Dutch contenders among the men

In contrast to the women's election, we do not see any Dutch names on the list of nominees for the men.

With Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, two multiple Golden Ball winners have been nominated.

Robert Lewandowski seems to be one of the big favorites for the prestigious award.

The Poole top striker, who scored a record 41 Bundesliga goals last season, already trumped Messi and Ronaldo in December last year in the FIFA election for best footballer of the year.

Will Gravenberch be De Ligt's successor?

At the Golden Ball gala, the Kopa Trophy is also awarded to the greatest talent of the year on the European fields.

With Ryan Gravenberch, who is experiencing his breakthrough at Ajax and made his debut in Orange this year, there is one Dutch contender.

The list consists of ten players, including Pedri.

The FC Barcelona promise is the only one in the list that is also one of the nominees for the Golden Ball.

The Kopa Trophy was last awarded in 2019 and was then for Matthijs de Ligt.

At the first award ceremony, the prize fell in the hands of Liverpool's Alisson Becker, who this time is not one of the contenders.

The number two at the time, FC Barcelona keeper Marc-André ter Stegen, is not on the shortlist this time either.

Ederson, who finished third in 2019, is competing for the trophy again.
