5 Olympic champions ready for the Swimming World Cup in Abu Dhabi

The Abu Dhabi Sports Council has announced the joining of a new group of elite swimmers from North America, Europe, Africa and the Asia-Pacific region, to participate in the 15th edition of the 2021 World Swimming Championships for short distances (25 meters) scheduled at the Federation Arena on Yas Island from 16 to 21 next December.

The council said, in a statement, yesterday: “The tournament will witness a wonderful display of the skills and talents of international swimmers from all continents of the world, including the Australian Kyle Chalmers, the world champion and six-time Olympic medalist, and the British Thomas Dean, the two-time Olympic gold medalist during the Tokyo Games. Olympic champion Daya Seto of Japan, who won several world titles, South African Matthew Sats, who recently won the 2021 World Swimming Championships, and the brilliant young Olympic champion Lydia Jacobi from the United States of America.

He added, “The year’s competitions also witnessed impressive numbers, as Chalmers set a world record in the 100m freestyle short swimming pool, during winning the gold medal at the World Cup in Russia in October, and is seeking to break more records in December.”

Britain's Thomas Dean won the Olympic gold in the 200m freestyle, while 18-year-old South African veteran swimmer Matthew Saats, the junior record holder in the 200m freestyle and 200m medley, is looking forward to continuing his career in Breaking records in Abu Dhabi, after his outstanding performance in the 2021 World Swimming Championships for juniors, where he set world records in the 200 meters freestyle and individual swim.

Swimmer Daya Seto returns to the UAE to participate in the championship, after his last appearance in the 2016 World Swimming Championships. The Japanese starred in the individual medley, butterfly, breaststroke, and freestyle categories, as Seto won the gold in the 400m individual medley for the third time in Swimming world championships (25 meters) in 2012, 2014 and 2016, and he aspires to get another gold medal in December. Seto is also the first Asian swimmer to become the world champion in the individual medley class.

The list of contestants also included elite swimming stars in the world, among more than 1,000 athletes, to compete in 44 international competitions over six days, with a total prize pool of $2.8 million.
