• Fulgence Ouedraogo broke the record for appearances for Montpellier in all competitions: 332, one more than hooker Didier Bès.

  • At the club for 18 years (including 16 years in the pro team), the third wing could integrate by the end of the season the Top 10 players who have played the most matches in professional rugby.

  • The flanker was the first Montpellier to wear the jersey of the France team, against the All Blacks during a tour of the southern hemisphere in 2007.

Fulgence Ouedraogo became the most capped player in Montpellier on the occasion of the MHR victory against Castres (25-24) on Saturday.

I wanted to ignore the context, but I don't think I succeeded, because there were a lot of emotions,” said the third row wing after match.

The 35-year-old flanker played his 332nd match for the MHR, beating by one the previous record held by Didier Bès.

The hooker had allowed Montpellier to access the professional elite and then to stay there despite a lower budget than most of its competitors (between 1990 and 2003).

Forever the first

Arrived from his training club of Pic Saint-Loup in 2003 (like his friend François Trinh-Duc), the flanker played his first match with the pros on May 20, 2005 during a defeat in Biarritz (45-3), then one of the best teams in France with which Montpellier had decided to run. The emergence of Ouedraogo, but also of Trinh-Duc, Louis Picamoles and Julien Tomas, called “The Fantastic Four”, had enabled the club to take a sporting step.

"Fufu", who spent 18 years at the club, was also the first player from Montpellier to wear the France team jersey during a tour of New Zealand on June 9, 2007. There is played 39 games, most often as a holder, until the 2015 World Cup. He was part of the winning team of the Grand Slam in the VI Nations Tournament in 2010, the last title of the Blues.

A Top 10 in his sights

Twice finalist of the Top 14, double winner of the Challenge Cup, he could enter at the end of the season in the Top 10 players who have played the most matches in the league (282) of the professional era.

The record is held by Thibaut Privat (387).

The tenth player on this list is Julien Pierre (who played 294).
