The African Football Confederation (CAF) on Friday gave its support to the "decision of the Fifa Congress to conduct a feasibility study" for a biennial World Cup, instead of the usual quadrennial rhythm.
CAF, meeting in an Extraordinary General Assembly at its headquarters in Cairo, is thus the first confederation to officially and publicly approve the controversial project of holding a World Cup every two years, at the same pace as its African Cup. nations.
54 votes for Africa during the vote
Anything but a surprise.
The vast majority of the leaders of this continent had declared themselves in favor of this reform, believing that it would increase the chances of qualifying, while allowing the federations to increase their income.
AFC (Asia) and Concacaf (Central America, North America and the Caribbean) are also in favor, while UEFA (Europe) and Conmebol (South America) are opposed to this project.
With 54 federations, Africa will weigh heavily when it comes to voting.
This biennial World Cup proposal is to be discussed on December 21 at a summit bringing together by videoconference the 211 national federations that are members of Fifa.
Its president, Gianni Infantino, wants the reform to enter into force in 2028.
