"He is very convincing, I don't think anyone expected him to do so well, except Marc Overmars and me. So he is my number one."

The trainer nevertheless gives Onana a chance against Besiktas.

The 25-year-old goalkeeper was unavailable for nine months due to a doping suspension, but has been eligible to play again since November 4.

He plays his first match for Ajax in Turkey since January 31.

Onana, who is at odds with the club management because he does not want to extend his expiring contract, already played for Cameroon during the last international match.

"The season is still long. André also has to start goalkeeping again and get used to our playing style, which is why I chose him today," said Ten Hag.

"He was gone for a long time, then we built it up very quietly. This is the next step, he can show where he stands."

Ten Hag made a total of six changes to his basic team.

Antony is forced out of the selection;

the Brazilian attacker dropped out during the last training session on Tuesday and is not fit.

Ajax is already certain of a place in the knockout phase of the Champions League and can secure group victory in Istanbul on Wednesday.

Kick-off in Vodafone Park was at 6.45 pm.
