Since 2017, the rental of a seasonal furnished apartment requires declaring it at the town hall, the registration number must be indicated in the advertisement.

The Alda association, an association for the defense of inhabitants of working-class areas and neighborhoods in the Basque Country, had found that many offers on the Airbnb site did not indicate any, therefore making them illegal.

A process of appeasement

A standoff between the site and Biarritz has been underway ever since.

The platform explained that the Biarritz registration procedure was not instantaneous, and therefore did not comply with the required requirements.

With the tool being brought into compliance in December, Airbnb will have a period of one month to remove illegal ads, before being sued.

"We are in a process of appeasement", told our colleagues Juliette Langlais, director of public affairs at Airbnb.

This case takes place while a housing crisis is underway in the Basque Country;

a demonstration on this subject took place this Saturday in Bayonne.

In Bayonne, precisely, and in Anglet, illegal advertisements should be removed from December 7.
