Daniel Ståhl was among the nominees for the coveted prize, but when the International Athletics Federation World Athletics presented the five finalists, his name did not appear.

The Swedish pole vaulter Armand Duplantis has during the season taken home gold at the indoor European Championships, the same denomination at the Olympics and also won the Diamond League.

He settles for the award as the male athlete of the year in the world with four others.

These are the following names: long-distance runner Joshua Cheptegei, Uganda, shot putter Ryan Crouser, USA, marathon star Eliud Kipchoge, Kenya and world record holder in the 400 meter hurdles Karsten Warholm, Norway.

The latter was named male athlete of the year in Europe earlier this year.

The prize will be awarded in nine days.
