France asked on Sunday that Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai, who reappeared at a tournament after weeks of mystery about her fate, could "speak" freely to clarify her situation. "I find this matter very worrying", declared the French Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian at the microphone of private television LCI. “I’m just waiting for one thing, and that’s Ms. Peng Shuai to speak. And if the Chinese authorities want to shed some light, they must allow Ms. Peng Shuai to speak, to say where she is, how she lives, what she does, how she is preparing for the Olympics ” .

“She has obviously disappeared, if it is not true, and although she speaks (...).

If by any chance it was forbidden to him, if there was obviously a disappearance, we would have to draw the diplomatic consequences, ”added the head of French diplomacy, without further clarification.

A public appearance but still no speech

Following a global outcry, including from tennis stars and the United Nations, Chinese state media published a series of footage purported to show all is well with the athlete.

She appeared at a tennis tournament in Beijing on Sunday according to official photos from the event.

Peng Shuai, 35, former world number 1 doubles player and star in her country, had not been seen publicly since she accused Zhang Gaoli, a powerful ex-Communist Party official 40 years her senior, of forcing her to have sex during a discontinuous relationship lasting several years.
