The 25th edition of the World Karate Championship for men and women, held since November 16 at the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Sports Complex in Dubai, was officially opened yesterday, and the curtain will be closed tomorrow, with the participation of 1,000 male and female players from 117 countries.

The official opening ceremony was attended by the Assistant Secretary-General of the General Sports Authority Khaled Al Midfa, the Assistant Secretary-General for Administrative and Financial Affairs of the National Olympic Committee, Eng. Azza bint Suleiman, the Assistant Secretary-General of the Dubai Sports Council Nasser Al Rahma, and the President of the International Karate Federation Antonios Espinos. The President of the UAE and Asian Karate Federations, the First Vice-President of the International Federation, Major General Nasser Abdul Razuqi, the President of the UAE Athletes Association, Dr. Ahmed Al Sharif, and a number of international and local dignitaries.

In a related context, Egyptian Ahlam Youssef gifted the first gold medal in the women's 55-kilogram kumite competition, knowing that it is the player's first participation in the World Cup tournaments.

The coach of the Egyptian national team, Abdel Fattah Al-Najjar, said in a press statement: “Ahlam’s unprecedented achievement in terms of her professional career raises the enthusiasm of the Egyptian mission in the World Cup in Dubai, especially since many of her colleagues succeeded in booking a place in the final round, and they are Abdullah Mamdouh in Weighing less than 75 kg, Youssef Emad, at less than 84 kg, and Menna Shaaban, at over 68 kg, who qualified for the final and compete for the gold medal, in addition to the team competitions.

He added, "Egypt's players have great chances of being able to win seven medals at the end of the World Cup in Dubai, as Ali Al-Sawy and Yasmine Al-Juwaili are competing for bronze medals."
