Héctor Vilellas Soro, a 27-year-old athlete from the Zaragoza town of Tauste, has died after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest while participating in the Behobia-San Sebastián race.

Vilellas was unwell in the Ategorrieta area, three kilometers from the finish line, after going through kilometer 15 with a time of one hour and fourteen minutes.

Initially, he was treated by the Red Cross in the same place where he vanished.

The Aragonese runner was transferred to the Donostia de San Sebastián Hospital, where he remained admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, but finally, Vilellas has not been able to overcome the situation and has died as the brain damage suffered after being 15 minutes in stop.

According to family sources, Vilellas had come to participate in the race with a friend.

Both had traveled to the Basque capital on a bus that had left that same Sunday from

Tauste

, in which other runners and companions were traveling.

It was not the first time that he participated in the Behobia-San Sebastián, since he already did so in the 2018 edition. Then, he invested an hour and fifty minutes to cover the 20 kilometers of the route of a famous popular race with a great tradition.

Héctor Vilellas Soro worked as a teacher in Pamplona and has always liked sports, specifically athletics.

They assure that he was a young man with a cheerful and affectionate character, and his death has caused great consternation in Tauste, a Zaragoza town in the Cinco Villas region, of about 7,000 inhabitants.

The Aragonese runner was not the only one who suffered a cardiac arrest in the 56th edition of Sunday's race.

Another athlete, 34, had to be treated by DYA assistance and was taken to the same health center.

Five deaths

With the death of Vilellas, there are already five runners who have lost their lives in the Behobia-San Sebastián race since it began to be held in 1979, in what is considered the modern stage of the event.

The previous death took place in 2015 when the Navarrese

José Javier Suescun Subero

fell suddenly collapsed after crossing the finish line installed on the Boulevard, without the resuscitation work carried out by the health workers being able to do anything to save the life of this natural industrial engineer from Berbinzana.

In 2013, it was also

Arantza Ezquerro from

Navarra

who suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest at the height of the Kursaal, with just one kilometer left to finish the test.

Three years earlier, in 2010, the Biscayan runner

César Elorduy died

, who also felt unwell in the Kursaal area.

The previous fatal misfortune occurred in the 2002 edition when the young Irundarra

Asier Torrente

died of a heart attack a few meters from the finish line.

In 2000, it was necessary to mourn the death of

Kintxo Urreisti

, due to a heart attack.

He was a member of the organization who did volunteer work

in the finish area.
