It was on the 48th of 71 laps that the incident occurred.

Hamilton tried to pass and both cars ended up off the track.

Already during the race, Mercedes reacted to the incident and thought it should be investigated, but was rejected.

- I braked late and the tires were worn but I tried to defend myself, Verstappen said.

Eleven laps later Hamilton managed to pass and won the race before Verstappen.

With the help of new camera images from Verstappen's cockpit, Mercedes has obtained new information, which was not known during the race, and can, according to Article 14.1.1 of the competition rules, submit a protest.

"Laughable that Verstappen was not punished"

"Mercedes can confirm that, on the basis of new evidence, it has submitted a report following an incident in the fourth curve between car 44 and car 33," Mercedes writes in a statement.

During the race, Mercedes wanted an extra five seconds on the Verstappen.

There are different types of penalties for this type of offense.

For example, there may be time additions and relegation in the starting line-up.

- It really does not matter if Max got a penalty or not because it was the result I needed, Hamilton said about the incident after the race.

Mercedes chief Toto Wolff was all the more upset.

"It is laughable that Verstappen was not punished," he said

There are three competitions left of this year's F1 season and Verstappen leads with 14 points ahead of Hamilton (each victory is worth 25 points).

On Friday, Hamilton was disqualified from the qualifiers at Interlagos in Sao Paulo after using a faulty internal combustion engine.

On Saturday, Verstappen was fined half a million kronor for touching Hamilton's Mercedes when it was parked after the qualifiers.

The next competition will take place in Qatar next weekend.
