Iran strengthens its lead in the World Cup qualifiers after defeating Syria.. Korea hardens Iraq

The Iranian national team regained the top spot in the first group of the Asian qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup, by defeating its Syrian counterpart 3-0 today in the sixth round of the qualifiers.

Earlier today, the South Korean team defeated its Iraqi counterpart 3-0, and the UAE team defeated its Lebanese host 1-0.

The Iranian team raised its score to 16 points to regain the lead, two points ahead of the runner-up South Korea. The UAE team is in third place with six points, Lebanon is in fourth place with five points, then Iraq is in fifth place with four points, and Syria is at the bottom of the standings with two points.

At King Abdullah II Stadium in Amman, Sardar Azmoun advanced with a goal for Iran in the 33rd minute, then Ihsan Haj Safi added the second goal from a penalty kick in the 42nd minute, and Ali Golzadeh secured the third goal in the 89th minute.

At Thani Bin Jassim Stadium in Doha, South Korea finished the first half ahead of Iraq with a goal scored by Lee Jae-sung in the 33rd minute. In the second half, Heung-min Son added the second goal from a penalty kick in the 70th minute, and Jeong Woo-young scored the third goal in the minute 80.

Earlier today, the UAE national football team succeeded in achieving its first victory in the qualifiers, by defeating its Lebanese host 1-0.

Ali Mabkhout scored the UAE national team's only goal in the 85th minute from a penalty kick.
