One wing less?

The maxi-trimaran skippered by Thomas Coville and Thomas Rouxel (Sodebo Ultim 3) crashed into an ofni (unidentified floating object) overnight from Wednesday to Thursday off the Moroccan coast, damaging one of the two foils (side appendages) which allow him to fly, during the Transat Jacques-Vabre.

The two sailors are safe and sound in the boat, their team and the race organization said.

The starboard foil is damaged.

The boat was in second position in the double-handed transatlantic, which left Le Havre on Sunday for Martinique.

The 15th edition of the Transat Jacques-Vabre, a bi-annual race, started on November 7 from Le Havre to Fort-de-France with 79 boats divided into four classes (Ultim, Imoca, Ocean Fifty and Class 40) and three different routes depending on the class.

After three days of racing, two boats abandoned: the Imoca (Vendée Globe boat) of Louis Burton / Davy Beaudart (Bureau Vallée 3) and of Justine Mettraux / Simon Fisher (11th Hour Racing Team - Alaka'i), both having dismasted.

Franck Cammas and Charles Caudrelier in the lead

The organizers of the Transat Jacques-Vabre authorize technical stopovers: Coville can therefore choose to go to a port to repair, depending on the extent of the damage, then start the race again.

This is what he did during the Route du Rhum 2018 (solo transatlantic) with his old trimaran, seriously damaged on the front left arm.

He had resumed the race after six days of repairs in the port of La Coruña (Spain).

Launched in March 2019, the maxi-trimaran is part of the elitist fleet of the Ultim class (32 m flying multihulls).

The five Ultim entered in the Transat Jacques-Vabre - two of which left the shipyards in April and July - are back in a major multi-class offshore race after a catastrophic Route du Rhum 2018.

The Ultim fleet is currently led by the trimaran of Franck Cammas and Charles Caudrelier (Maxi Edmond de Rothschild).
