• Deprived of celebrations by the Covid-19, Stade Rennais has decided to celebrate its 120th anniversary with the release of the film “Au fer rouge” which will be visible in theaters this week.

  • This documentary traces the history of the Breton club, from the greatest joys to the greatest sorrows.

  • The objective of the film is to show the entire history of the club, created by four students in 1901, in order to transmit its values.

Seeing these images again in a movie theater is not without consequences. Let's face it straight away: with the big screen, the immersive sound and the explosion of the supporters, we almost shed a few tears when we saw Mexer's equalizer for the 288th time or Julien Stéphan's chat at mid -time. And our hearts were clearly racing when we watched the penalty shootout against PSG as if we did not know the outcome.

Monday morning,

20 Minutes

gave itself a nostalgic sequence by taking its place in the comfortable black seats of the Arvor to discover the documentary "Au fer rouge". Published by Stade Rennais to celebrate its 120th anniversary, this 80-minute film retraces the history of the club in the Breton capital through archive images and testimonies. "We made the choice of emotion, it is subjective and fully assumed", explains Jacques Delanoë, president of the club.

Through interviews with several pillars or former members of the club, from Romain Danzé to François-Henri Pinault via Patrick Rampillon, journalist Vincent Simmoneaux, or the former mayor of Rennes Edmond Hervé, the documentary shows the key moments in its history . From the creation by four students in 1901 to the Coupe de France title in 2019, the spectator enjoys a football bath and discovers some little-known facets of the club, like the threat of bankruptcy that hung over the Stadium. Rennais in 1977. “We did not hide the painful moments. You shouldn't be ashamed of your weaknesses. I even think that this constitutes our strength ”, analyzes Jacques Delanoë.

Offered in preview this Tuesday at the Arvor, the documentary will be shown for a week in the arthouse cinema managed by Eric Gouzannet, a big fan of Stade Rennais since he attended a legendary Rennes-Monaco in the quarter-final of the Coupe de France in 1971.

Directed by Antoine Biard, who had signed the very successful "You will never be alone", the documentary aims to "show the truth".

“We analyzed hundreds of hours of images to tell this club.

It is not an advertising object ”, estimates its director, who now officiates as director of the communication of the Breton club.

“A documentary like that gives you a club.

We realize where we come from.

This reminds us of the duty of responsibility vis-à-vis its history, the need to take care of it, ”adds Romain Danzé, who hung up his crampons in 2019.

François Henri-Pinault's European dream

The film "Au fer rouge" also allows to know the ultimate "dream" of François-Henri Pinault. Since the acquisition of the club by his father in 1998, the businessman has seen Stade Rennais grow but also fail on multiple occasions, especially in the Coupe de France. “My dream would be to win a European Cup. And another Coupe de France too, because the Stade de France in red and black, it looks good ”. On the occasion of the preview this Tuesday, a dozen 1971 cup winners will also be present in the room.

In addition to the film's release, which should be available on DVD before Christmas, a book with the same name has been published by Editions du coin de la rue.

Already the author of several books on the Rennes club, journalist Benjamin Keltz has released a photo book that traces the history of the SRFC through the eyes and testimonies of its most loyal supporters.

And there are more and more of them.
