Yang Dongwu, director of the Cultural Relics Conservation Management Office of Chongli District, Zhangjiakou City, who has been associated with the ancient Great Wall here for six years, is very emotional: "Winter Olympic athletes from all over the world will appreciate the style of the Great Wall of China. As a Great Wall conservation worker, Yang Dongwu knows the ancient Great Wall in Chongli well: there are 7 Great Walls in the Warring States, Qin, Han, Northern Wei, Northern Qi, Tang, and Ming dynasties in the Chongli realm. The total length of the Great Wall sites of each generation is 257.1 kilometers.
The Great Wall has a wide variety of architectural forms, including earth ramming, stone construction, earth-rock mixed construction, dry stone ramparts, and other architectural forms, which have important historical value.
"Zhangjiakou is known as the'Great Wall Museum of Past Dynasties', and Chongli is the largest showroom in this museum." Yang Dongwu said.
In 2015, Beijing and Zhangjiakou won the right to host the 2022 Winter Olympics.
In the same year, Yang Dongwu went to work at the Chongli District Cultural Relics Protection Management Office.
At that time, the construction of the Zhangjiakou competition area had not yet started, and the ancient Great Wall of Chongli was "raised by a deep boudoir."
Since 2015, Yang Dongwu has measured more than 90% of the ancient Great Wall in Chongli.
"Many of the ancient Great Walls are hidden in the more dangerous places in the mountains. To inspect, you can only hike into the mountains." Yang Dongwu said, the longest inspection of the ancient Great Wall, he walked 30 kilometers of mountain roads.
To Yang Dongwu's gratification, in recent years, government departments have paid more and more attention to the protection of the Great Wall, and the people of Chongli have gradually increased their awareness of the protection of the Great Wall.
Taking advantage of the hosting of the Winter Olympics, the Great Wall will become a cultural symbol to be displayed in front of audiences around the world.
Wang Hao, the designer of the Tsinghua University design team who participated in the design of the Beijing Winter Olympics venue, said, “At the beginning of the venue design, many foreign filming teams asked for it, hoping to photograph the Great Wall at the same time as the track.”
In response to this, Wang Jingxian, deputy director of the second venue construction department of the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee and manager of the Guyangshu venue group facilities, said, “'Hosting the Winter Olympics at the foot of the Great Wall' is our original promise. Now we have fulfilled our promise. , Athletes from all over the world can see the Great Wall, a cultural symbol representing China, during the entire Winter Olympic Games."
According to reports, athletes can see the Great Wall in the distance when they slide down from the national ski jumping center called "Xue Ruyi".
Not only that, the National Cross-Country Ski Center and National Biathlon Center are extremely close to the ancient Great Wall, and the nearest track is only a dozen meters away from the Great Wall.
In order to allow spectators from all over the world to see the Great Wall of China better, Chongli implemented the current renovation project of the East section of the Great Wall in Hualin, the core area of the Winter Olympics. The 550-meter wall of the Great Wall, 1 beacon tower and 1 enemy tower have been renovated.
Currently, the Hualin East Section of the Great Wall display and lighting project is being implemented. It is planned to complete the display and lighting of about 6 kilometers of the Great Wall and 7 beacon towers and enemy platforms.
Yang Dongwu said that Chongli will take the existing Great Wall sites around the core area of the Winter Olympics as the core, combine the current international most advanced site protection and display technology, sort out the protection and display methods, and form an overall tour and display system for the cultural park.
The Great Wall National Cultural Park will display cultural characteristics, present a highly integrated and complementary landscape effect of internationality, culture and artistry, and achieve the high-quality goals of "Great Wall + Winter Olympics" and "Great Wall + Sports + Nature".
Yang Dongwu took out a drawing to show the effect. In the night, the Great Wall lit by lights stretched among the mountains of Chongli and became the most eye-catching background color in the Winter Olympics.
