• Study The cost of using an electric vehicle is already equal to that of a combustion car in most of Europe

  • Sales The chip crisis hits the VO market and ages the park

In the spring of 2018, the writer of this was done with a

Ford Ecosport 1.0 gasoline and 125 horses for 17,000 euros (with discounts).

New.

This same week,

in one of the many portals dedicated to the sale of used vehicles,

an identical model (in a different color, but with the same characteristics and Titanium finish) with 47,000 kilometers traveled was offered for ... 16,400 euros.

Minutes later, another offer appeared on the computer screen: a brand new Volvo XC40 Recharge AWD 100% electric from 2021 and with only 10 km on the scoreboard for 56,200 euros.

That is, its newly registered price, but without having to wait to have it.

Whoever has this budget, will hardly have problems.

Or if.

Alicia, a young graphic designer

wants a high-end model.

"I have looked at a new Audi that costs 50,000 euros, but what I find with about three years

does not

fall below

40,000 and without any special equipment"

he laments.

Josetxu, a colleague from the newsroom, has been searching for a more sophisticated model for weeks.

"Buying a second-hand car in Madrid today is more difficult than renting a flat.

You see one that interests you and, if you call the next day, they have already sold it," he says.

Prices as if they were new

And it is that "there are no cars", lament the manufacturers. "There are no cars," ratify the dealers.

"And there are no used vehicles, at least at reasonable prices, and the ones I can buy are old,"

users complain, in chorus with the rest of those affected.

We already said it before.

A tour of the concessions, face-to-face or virtual, shows that the prices are so sky-high that

"in some cases they are more expensive than when they were sold new,"

says Raúl Morales, communication director of Faconauto, the dealers' association. Spanish people.

And it does not happen only in Spain:

according to the Eurotrader consultancy, the same happens in the United Kingdom.

These are extreme cases, but in general we find a rise in the prices of second-hand cars that nobody expected and that is close to those that once had the same models just off the production line.

15.5% more expensive than a year ago

According to data from the Ganvam sellers association,

the average price of vehicles less than five years old grew by 2.6% in September compared to the same month in 2019 and by 15.5% if the reference is September 2020.

Last year, the pandemic pushed prices down: from an average of 18,976 euros per registered car in September 2019, it went to 16,864 in the ninth month of 2020. Last month this average price

stood at 19,477 euros. And up.

The reason: the demand is much greater than the supply.

On the one hand, second-hand cars have become a

refuge for those who fear making mistakes when buying a vehicle with the wrong technology

.

Also for those who

need or have to change cars, yes or yes, but

do not get a new one.

And to them, to raise the pressure even more, have joined those who opted for a brand new vehicle, but who, due to the microchip crisis, find

delivery periods ranging from six to eight months - even a year - and they don't want to wait.

In this way, so far this year, for each registered car, 2.2 used cars have been sold.

In September, that ratio reached 2.7.

Buy back from customers

The situation is so critical that it

is easy to find advertisements on social media or the Internet for brands desperately looking for cars.

Yours, whoever's. The absence of stock of new vehicles and the drop-in arrival of those that are manufactured make it necessary to extend the networks to the clients themselves, not only to sell them cars, but to buy them from them. Dealers

BMW, Mercedes-Benz or DS, to name premium brands, have launched campaigns to promote your networking site selling 'online' and remember that now also purchase.

And the brand does not matter. In other cases, the contact is established through WhatsApp. Or by means of an email in which they suggest to a customer who acquired a vehicle only three years ago, if they would be interested in parting with it.

The boom in the second-hand market, in addition to being an obvious brake on the economy of various sectors, is creating an obstacle to the environmental objectives of the EU.

"Little progress will be made in decarbonisation if the sale of vehicles registered 10 or more years ago is going to close this year at around 1,175,000 units,

while the sales of new vehicles will barely reach, hopefully, 900,000", says Tania Puche, communication director of Ganvam.

The effect of the semiconductor crisis

The chain of shortages begins in the chip and semiconductor production centers located in Asia, which are few and during the pandemic they stopped having the automotive as a preferred customer.

With the car factories stopped or at half throttle due to the pandemic, sectors such as entertainment became much more important, which stored stock and arranged large purchases in the future.

The automotive industry could not foresee the chaos. He only realized it when the lawsuit was reactivated. But he could no longer manufacture at full capacity without those tiny elements.

From this strategic error (understandable) starts a house of cards that splashes and leaves a mark on the market for new and used cars.

The factories do not produce the necessary units

(2.2 million units in Spain in 2021 compared to 2.7 million in 2019);

fleets, which are the main suppliers of used cars, cannot renew their fleet with new cars

and the second-hand supply also collapses and is reduced to what individuals or

older cars

need to sell

, which, while also growing in price They are more affordable and are acquired to endure 'until the storm passes'.

In Spain, a third of the second-hand market are vehicles with more than 15 years.

Faconauto and Ganvam estimate that there are more than 13 million cars in circulation with more than 10 years old.
