Bayern Munich - the German Football League champion - encouraged its players to vaccinate against Covid-19, but stressed that it is not mandatory, amid an uproar sparked by Joshua Kimmich's announcement of his rejection of the vaccine.

And the German international said - last Saturday - that he refuses to vaccinate due to fears of its long-term side effects.

But he said he might take a vaccination in the future.

This caused a storm of criticism across Germany;

Many said that footballers should set an example for everyone.

The German Football Association said today, Tuesday, that more than 90% of the players and technical staff in the two highest levels of the league have been vaccinated.

"We can only advise everyone to get vaccinated," Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn told reporters.
