  • Ecology Synthetic fuels: the solution for classic Porsche

In the US, a car is not understood without automatic transmission, although there are also manuals.

It is true that, due to its almost hedonistic approach to the automobile, an object created to carry from A to B with maximum comfort.

In Europe, the proliferation of this type of device has been much later and, for example, in Spain the group of taxi drivers has traditionally been one of its great detractors.

Their bad reputation preceded them because they increased consumption, they were not very refined and their breakdowns were much more expensive.

In the last decade,

however, its implementation has been considerably rapid, reaching even the utility segment

thanks to technical improvements and the economies of scale of large groups.

Get your license in a car without a clutch

It has done it in three forms:

the automatic gearbox with a torque converter

(the

traditional one

),

the continuous variator

(with infinite gears)

and the double clutch boxes

(automated manual transmissions where there is no clutch pedal). The advent of the latter has, in fact, practically banished the nastiest and harshest first-generation robotic manual gears.

In fact, these types of cars are already the majority in countries like Germany, where according to the consulting firm Jato Dynamics, of the 5,838 models for sale, only a third is manual

.

And in Spain the DGT has already allowed for a long time to prepare, and to examine the practical test of the license with a model without a clutch pedal.

Although this permit does not allow to handle manual models later.

VW won't release manual models from 2023

With electrified cars, automatic gearboxes will practically become the only option.

And in some brands like VW, even before 2035, which is when the EU (and the UN) want to stop making cars with a combustion engine.

Although it remains to be seen if the ban also covers plug-in hybrids that also have a heat engine on that date.

According to the publication

Auto Motor und Sport

,

the new VW Tiguan that goes on sale in 2023 will no longer have a version with a clutch pedal.

The same will happen with the Passat

that is released that same year and the idea is that it will flow downstream and upstream until,

in 2030, the entire range is 100% automatic.

Something that right now only happens in high-end brands, not even in premium German ones like Mercedes, BMW or Audi.

The Porsche Taycan is 100% electric with two gears

Electric: forward and reverse

Volkswagen has relatively easy to deliver on its promise.

For years, it already has the wild card of the DSG double clutch transmission, assembled by millions of vehicles

in this brand and in the others of the German consortium.

In addition, it wants 70% of its sales in 2030 to correspond to battery-powered models.

A date that other brands such as Jaguar or Audi advance several years.

And it is that, although in the origins there were, at present

all the pure and plug-in hybrid cars (not the light ones) have automatic transmissions.

There are two reasons: the complexity of deciding whether to work the combustion engine, the electric motor or both at the same time;

and the search for maximum efficiency.

In both areas, electronics outperform the human factor.

And if we talk about exclusively battery-powered models, it is that there is no change.

Basically the electric motor is rotated in one direction

(to move the car forward)

or in the opposite direction

(to move back).

Only in some very sporty models such as the Porsche Taycan do they have two relationships,

in order to achieve maximum performance in all circumstances, be it in the form of better performance or greater autonomy.
