Golf star Rory McIlroy clinched his 20th victory on the PGA tour and won the tournament in Las Vegas.

The Northern Irishman caught up nine strokes behind on the two final days at the weekend and ultimately won on Sunday (local time) with one stroke ahead of the two-time major champion from the USA.

McIlroy needed 62 strokes on Saturday and 66 on Sunday for his final result of 263. Rickie Fowler, who was still leading on Saturday, fell back to fourth behind Keith Mitchell with a 71 lap on the final day.

“I've been trying to be someone else for the past few months. Now I've realized that being myself is enough to do things like that, ”said McIlroy, who last suffered a devastating defeat against the USA with the European team at the prestigious Ryder Cup.

McIlroy, formerly world number one, has now won at least one PGA tour win in the past five years.

After his 15th season on the tour in two years, he has lifelong playing rights, according to the US news agency AP.

Normally, golfers have to qualify for tournaments or tours again and again, for example by winning previous events or by placing them on the world rankings.

In some events, however, after one or more victories, a lifetime right to play is granted to the winner.

The victory in Las Vegas was the 29th career title for McIlroy.
