Accompanied by protests by demonstrators against China, the Olympic flame was lit for the Winter Games in Beijing.

The flame was lit on Monday with the help of a concave mirror and the sun's rays in the ancient site of Olympia, as the Greek state television ERT showed.

Because of the corona pandemic, there will be no long torch relay in Greece.

The games will take place from February 4th to 20th, 2022.

Three demonstrators protested against the award of the Winter Games to China, they denounced the human rights situation in Tibet and Hong Kong.

They carried a banner with the slogan “No genocide games” and tried to jump the fence around the ancient site.

The police arrested them, reported the state television.

The authoritarian ruled China is accused of violating human rights, especially against minorities such as the Muslim Uyghurs.

Human rights groups cite the Xinjiang, Tibet and Hong Kong autonomous regions as examples of Chinese reprisals.

The ceremony was not interrupted by the protest.

The flame was to be carried to the Acropolis on Monday after Athens.

It should be handed over to the organizers on Tuesday.

This ceremony will take place in Athens' old Panathinaikon Stadium, the site of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.

Thomas Bach, the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), said in a short speech that the Olympic Games "build a bridge between people", regardless of the political or cultural differences.
