Barcelona signs a contract with a player with a penalty clause of "one billion euros"

Barcelona announced today, Thursday, that it has reached an agreement with its midfielder Pedri, to extend the latter's contract until 2026, including a penalty clause worth one billion euros ($1.16 billion).

"Barcelona and the player Pedro Gonzalez (Pedre) have agreed to extend the contract until June 30, 2026. The penalty clause is set at one billion euros," the Catalan club said in a statement.

Barcelona added that the signing ceremony for the 18-year-old will take place on Friday.

The deal comes as a big boost for Barcelona, which has been burdened by debt and forced many of its prominent players to leave the club, such as Argentine star Lionel Messi and Uruguayan Luis Suarez.

Pedri has emerged in recent months as one of the world's most attractive young talents.

He joined Barcelona from Las Palmas in 2020 and achieved a rocket success, playing 53 games under the leadership of Dutch coach Ronald Koeman in his first season.

Pedri scored against Real Betis to become Barcelona's fourth youngest scorer in the Spanish League, behind Ansu Fati, Bojan Krkic and Messi.

He also played a pivotal role in Spain reaching the Euro 2020 semi-finals.
