An upgrade of Camp Nou has been on the agenda for a long time but has dragged on.

Now, however, the club's president Joan Laporta says that they want to start work in the summer of 2022.

It is expected to take three to four years and will also allow Barcelona to play their home games in another arena for up to a year.

- We are considering different alternatives but the strongest candidate is Estadi Johan Cruyff, says Laporta to the radio channel Rac1 according to the news agency AP.

Estadi Johan Cruyff is the home arena for Barcelona's women's team and has a capacity for 6,000 spectators.

Should the men's team come to play there, the club wants to increase the capacity to 50,000.

An upgrade of the Camp Nou, which already takes 99,000 spectators, would mean increasing the audience capacity to 110,000 spectators while renovating the arena area.
