Many probably thought Leo Messi would take the penalty, which PSG was awarded after a lengthy VAR review, after Neymar had been brought down in the penalty area in a fight with Lyon defender Malo Gusto.

But Neymar himself stepped up to the penalty spot and coolly set his first league goal of the season.

Lionel Messi made his debut for PSG on 30 August, but has not yet succeeded in what he is otherwise so good at: scoring goals.

With 76 minutes played, the Argentinian player was replaced and when Mauricio Pochettino held out his hand to him, Messi seemed to give way and give the coach a long look on his way to the bench.

Rib meeting again for Messi

In tonight's league meeting with Lyon at home, it was otherwise as close as it can get, twice, in the first half for "the world's best football player".

The first huge situation came in the 32nd minute when Nyemar heeled the ball to Messi who basically had an open position with the goalkeeper, but the shot was too loose and saved with the foot of the outstretched Lyon keeper Anthony Lopes.

Just two minutes later a perfect free kick position just outside the penalty area for Messi and Parc De Princes held their breath.

But the shot through the wall in the crossbar.

At the beginning of the second half, it was instead Lyon who broke the deadlock and the match looked long to end 1-1. But in stoppage time, Mauro Icardi saved three points for the home team, when he nodded in the winning goal after a post by Kylian Mbappé.
