A joker goal by Florian Niederlechner gave FC Augsburg the acclaimed first victory of the season in the Bundesliga against a Gladbach Borussia that failed again away from home.

The substitute striker scored 1-0 (0-0) on Saturday after a thoughtful back pass from the strong Ruben Vargas in the 80th minute with a precise low shot.

Of two largely harmless teams, the weak offensive FCA was the more effective in the end.

In the first half, Daniel Caligiuri hit the post with a free kick (43.).

In the table, Augsburg overtook Gladbach (4 points) with five points.

Borussia and their new coach Adi Hütter have to get going quickly in order to keep an eye on the desired return to the European Cup.

The performance in Augsburg was far too little.

It started very intensely in front of the 12,500 authorized spectators in the WWK Arena.

For the first time with the Swiss loaner Andi Zeqiri in the starting line-up, the hosts shifted into forward gear.

The first attack swing, however, fizzled out.

The more mature Gladbachers took control of the game, but Hütter's team did not act precisely in the front line a week after the 3-1 win against Arminia Bielefeld.

Several crosses flew imprecisely into the penalty area.

More dangerous was the FCA, which absolutely wanted the first home win and appeared poisonous in the many duels. When Ruben Vargas vigorously conquered the ball against national player Florian Neuhaus in midfield, referee Florian Badstübner decided that the Augsburg attacker fouled. The entire FCA bank including manager Stefan Reuter jumped up indignantly (30th). The biggest upset of the first half, however, was a cut free kick by Caligiuri, which flew through the Gladbach penalty area and dripped onto the post in the end (43rd).

The quality of the game remained modest even after the break.

The Gladbachers tried.

After a nice combination via Florian Neuhaus, Patrick Herrmann and captain Lars Stindl, Alassane met Plea, but was offside, as the video assistant confirmed.

A week after his two goals against Bielefeld, Stindl missed a promising header chance (67th).

At FCA, the 22-year-old Zeqiri remained without a closing action, although he was once cleared by compatriot Vargas.

Coach Markus Weinzierl took the risk when he replaced two attackers in Florian Niederlechner and Sergio Córdova (66th).

The courage was also rewarded.

A long ball from captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw passed Gladbach's defender Nico Elvedi.

Vargas served from the baseline from Niederlechner, who scored his second goal of the season.
