Sporting CP coach Rúben Amorim is somewhat at peace with the 1-5 defeat of his team against Ajax in the Champions League.

According to the Portuguese, there is simply a difference in quality between the two teams.

At halftime Ajax already led 1-3 in Estádio José Alvalade, where Sébastien Haller was the great star.

The striker of the team from Amsterdam scored no less than four times.

"It's quite simple: Ajax was better and already scored in the second minute. They were very good especially in the front, while we had little experience in the team. Some players were nervous," said Amorim on Wednesday after the match.

The coach was disappointed that Sporting's 2-3 was rejected just after the break.

"Then it would have been very different. After the fourth goal the game was over. My players suffered and could do little."

'I'm still proud of my players'

Amorim thinks his squad needs more European matches.

"Ajax is very experienced in Europe, we are not. I stick to the way my team reacted to the defeat. These results are sometimes part of it. We have to learn from this. I am still proud of my players."

Paulinho, the maker of the only Sporting goal, did not want to dwell on the big result.

He referred to last season, when his team recovered after a European disappointment by becoming Portuguese champions.

"We have to remain calm and realize that it is only about three points. Furthermore, we should not think too much about the result," he said.

"It's painful, but we will stand up just like last season."
