Ahead of this autumn's qualifiers for the World Cup 2023, the European Football Association (Uefa) has introduced the new requirement that all national teams must have at least one woman in the management staff.

But that only applies to the women's national team, which disturbs Marika Domanski Lyfors.

- What I turn to is that if you now make such a decision, then I think you should do the same on the gentlemen.

If the purpose of the decision is to bring in more female coaches in football, then it should be an equal requirement on both the women's and men's side, says Domanski Lyfors.

"Typically old men with power"

It is partly due to the new rules that Sweden has chosen to bring in the former attacking star Victoria Sandell as assistant to national team captain Peter Gerhardsson during the autumn.

Sandell himself is not directly shocked that UEFA's new rules only apply to the women's national team.

It is as it has always been, she states.

- It is always on the women's side that there are such demands, when perhaps it is actually on the men's side that it is needed.

But it typically feels old men with power, I'm not surprised.

It would have been cool if they had made this demand on the men's side as well.

But that probably won't happen, says Sandell.

Marika Domanski Lyfors is quick to point out that Sandell is not employed as a female alibi.

She is in the national team because she has things to add, says the national team manager.

Focus on the attack

- We would probably have done this anyway.

But this pushed for a faster decision, says Marika Domanski Lyfors.

- She has a lot of experience from championships and what it is like to be a player.

She herself was such a player who worked very much individually to take further steps towards the world top.

And she became the best in the world too.

Victoria Sandell (formerly Svensson) was one of the world's top scorers and scored 68 goals in her 168 A-national matches.

In her new role, she will focus on the attacking game.

- I have started to go into details for those who end up in final positions, how they run, how many completions are required before there are goals and so on.

As against the USA in the opening match of the Olympics, so many chances we have there, we usually do not have.

And it still took five good chances before we put it.

There you may need to be more efficient, says Victoria Sandell.

Three World Cup qualifiers

UEFA's requirements for at least one woman in the management team extend beyond the European Championships in England in 2022. But the agreement with Sandell only applies until the turn of the year - to begin with.

The 44-year-old first wants to see that the arrangement works.

Until now, she has worked part-time at the Swedish Football Association's education and development department and part-time as sports director for the Stockholm club FoC Farsta.

- We decided that I would jump on these three collections to begin with.

No matter how fun it is to be at the highest level with the national team, I do not want to spend ten days and feel that I do not contribute, says Victoria Sandell.

- And just the opposite, Peter and his team must feel that I contribute.
