Last night, the Serb defeated the German Olympic gold medalist from Tokyo, Alexander Zverev, in a nail-biter in five sets.

Now world number two Daniil Medvedev is waiting in the final on Sunday.

Novak Djokovic may soon write tennis history.

If he wins the US Open final on Sunday, he will be the men's player of all time with the most grand slam victories, 21.

Today he shares first place with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

He then also takes a so-called "real grand slam", that is, wins all four grand slam tournaments during the same year.

An achievement that so far only Rod Laver succeeded in 1969.

Revenge from the Olympics

But tonight's semifinal was anything but straightforward for the world setter.

Just like the last four rounds, he lost the first set, but came back in the next two with the numbers 6-2, 6-4.

With the knife to his throat, however, the 24-year-old Alexander Zverev, a finalist in the US Open last year, got up and managed to pinch the fourth set 6-4.

It was Zverev who knocked out Djokovic in the Olympic semi-finals a month and a half ago.

But there was no repetition of that feat this time.

After just over 3.5 hours of play, Djokovic was finally able to equalize the revenge by winning the fifth and decisive set 6-2.

Twelve servess

Earlier in the evening, world runner-up Daniil Medvedev got a walking victory in his semifinal. The 25-year-old Russian defeated the 15-ranked Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in three straight sets in New York with the numbers being 6-4, 7-5, 6-2.

The 21-year-old Auger-Aliassime had a hard time responding to Medvedev's murderous servers and the Russian hit a total of twelve services. Despite that, he was not really happy.

- I do not think I did my best today, but I am happy to play the final on Sunday, was Medvedev's comment after the match.

During the tournament, he has only lost a single set on his way to the final. The Russian world number two played the US Open final two years ago, but then lost to Rafael Nadal. In this year's Australian Open, Medvedev lost the final to Novak Djokovic
