Japan Rally canceled due to "Corona"

The Japan Rally, which was supposed to be the final stage of the World Rally Championship between November 11 and 14, has been canceled due to the outbreak of the Corona pandemic, organizers announced today.

The executive committee responsible for organizing the event said in a statement that "given the characteristics of the competition that is held on public roads with the inevitable cooperation of all members of the local community, the fact that the emergency cases of COVID-19 in Japan are increasing daily and the improvement of the situation is still unexpected, we did not have Unfortunately, the only option is to cancel the 2021 Japan Rally."

The organizers of the World Rally Championship said on their official website that an alternative round would be announced soon.

This is the second year in a row that organizers have been forced to cancel the Japan Rally, which was supposed to return to the racing calendar last year for the first time since 2010. After eight stages of racing, French Sebastien Ogier (Toyota) leads the drivers' standings with 162 points, a clear lead 38 points over his Welsh teammate Elvin Evans and Belgian Thierry Nouvel (Hyundai).

In the constructors' standings, Toyota leads with 348 points, ahead of Hyundai (307) and M-Sport Ford (135).

The next round, the famous Acropolis Rally, will take place in Greece from 9-12 September, followed by two other races on the calendar in Finland (1-3 October) and Spain (14-17-17).
