The 16-year-old high school graduate Vincent Keymer sensationally took second place at the European Chess Championships in Reykjavik.

The youngster from Saulheim in Rhineland-Hesse has left 30 higher-ranking grandmasters behind.

At the same time, he won his highest prize money to date with 17,500 euros.

Keymer narrowly missed the win.

Like Anton Demchenko, he scored 8.5 points in eleven rounds, but the Russian was ahead after the second ranking.

If the number of winning games had decided, Keymer would have become European champion.

In the penultimate round he played a brilliant game against Demchenko until he missed a surprising defensive move and the Russian escaped in a draw.

Niclas Huschenbeth (Berlin), Rasmus Svane (Lübeck) and Matthias Blübaum (Lemgo) each won 7.5 points.

In addition to Keymer, they also qualify for the World Cup 2023. Players of the extended world class were not at the start in Reykjavik because they are pre-qualified for the much higher endowed World Cup.
