• Interview Teresa Perales, Princess of Asturias Award: "I wear the chair on my ass, not on my head"

The Aragonese swimmer

Teresa Perales

, 45, suffered at dawn this Sunday a "situation of stress and anxiety" for which she had to be admitted.

The athlete is

under observation at the Tokyo Village Polyclinic

, as reported by the Spanish Paralympic Committee.

Perales is being treated by the medical services of the Spanish Paralympic team and of the Villa and, if her progress continues to be good, she is

scheduled to travel back to Spain this Monday

with the rest of the delegation.

Teresa Perales, winner of the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports in the 2021 edition,

competed in four events at the Tokyo Paralympic Games

, in which she achieved

a medal in 50 meters backstroke

and three diplomas.

Specifically, Perales hung

the 27th Paralympic medal of his sporting career

by receiving silver in the 50 meter backstroke with a time of 43.02.

The swimmer from Zaragoza achieved the metal despite having injured her left shoulder last May during the European Championship held in Funchal (Portugal) due to a muscle spasm while swimming, which made it difficult to prepare for the Japanese event.

As the swimmer herself announced, she is scheduled to undergo shoulder surgery as soon as she returns to Spain.

Perales' medical admission occurred this Sunday, the same day that the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games ended.

The Spanish delegation has closed its participation in the event with a total harvest of 36 medals (9 gold, 15 silver and 12 bronze) in seven sports: athletics, cycling, judo, swimming, table tennis, triathlon and shooting.

Sixth Games for Pear Trees

Those of Tokyo have been the sixth Pear Games that have been added to those of Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016.

But, without a doubt, her most special Games were those in London, where she was the standard bearer for the Spanish team and reached 22 Olympic medals.

In addition to the 2021 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, among the distinctions received in her land are the Aragón Government Medal of Sports Merit, and the title of Favorite Daughter of Zaragoza, of whose Fiestas del Pilar she was a proclamation.

Teresa Perales was 15 years old when her father died of leukemia, one of the fundamental events that, as she has recognized, have marked her life, along with the neuropathy that was detected at 19 and that left her in a wheelchair.

Then he turned to the water, to the pool, although swimming had not been his favorite sport until then.

Before contracting neuropathy, she was a karate practitioner.

She assures that water is synonymous with freedom, the place where she feels free, where she is in front of herself.

During the last two decades, she has been one of the

greatest promoters

of the opening up of

Paralympic sport to

society

.
