He ended his handball career to undergo a gender correction.

Now, two years later, Loui Sand is back in elite handball.

The 28-year-old has this summer signed on - and made his debut - for Kärra IF.

But to play for the club in the men's Swedish team, a match permit from the Swedish Handball Association is required.

He has now received it.

We work for inclusion and everyone's right to participate and thus also to counteract all forms of discrimination, the decision was obvious, says the Swedish Handball Association's chairman Fredrik Rapp according to the association's official website.

"Extremely grateful"

Sand, who has previously represented the clubs Önnereds HK, IK Sävehof, Brest Bretagne and Fleury Loiret, thought he would never be able to play handball again.

- The longing to play and belong to a team again was so enormous and I am so happy that I get this opportunity.

- I am proud to be the first trans guy ever to do this in handball and I hope that other trans guys feel that we should be included.

"Wish Loui good luck"

The union also writes that the Swedish Tax Agency has approved the change of legal sex.

It is a requirement in SHF's regulations to be allowed to play men's handball.

- We are very positive that Loui has chosen to return to handball and wish both Loui and Kärra good luck, says Robert Wedberg, Secretary General of SHF.
