Manchester City announced the arrest of its defender, Benjamin Mendy, for his involvement in rape and assault cases over the past two years (2019 and 2020).

The club stated - in a statement today, Thursday - that it decided to suspend the French defender pending investigation, after he was charged by the police.

The statement added that the case is subject to "legal procedures and therefore the club is unable to provide further comments until these procedures are completed."

The Associated Press reported that Mindy, 27, faces four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

Police said the charges relate to incidents that allegedly occurred between October 2020 and August 2021. He is due to appear in court on Friday.

Mendy joined City from Monaco in 2017, and played against Tottenham in the opening match in the English Premier League and missed the Norwich match last Saturday in the second round.
