No US Open this year for Serena Williams, the 39-year-old American star herself announced the news on her Instagram account on Wednesday.
"After careful consideration and on the advice of my medical team, I have decided to retire from the US Open in order to fully heal my hamstring tear," wrote the younger Williams sisters.
Injured in the right leg, the American, 23 times titled in a grand slam, had to give up in the first round of Wimbledon against the Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich, on June 29.
The former world No. 1, dropped to 22nd, has not appeared in competition since.
In early August, she had already given up participating in the Cincinnati tournament, an event that traditionally serves as a preparation for the last grand slam tournament of the season.
Court's record will not be broken yet
With Serena Williams, six-time winner at Flushing Meadows, the US Open still loses one of its main headliners.
His package is in addition to those of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and defending champion Dominic Thiem in the men's table.
On a personal level, the American gives up another opportunity to equal the record of Margaret Court, winner of 24 major tournaments.
The last Grand Slam tournament won by Serena Williams was in 2017, at the Australian Open.
