Anna Nordqvist took her latest victory when she won The Evian Championship 2017. Since then, she has had a few heavier years and, among other things, suffered from a prolonged glandular fever.

- You question whether you will win again.

When you have been close a few times, it becomes very disappointing and such, she says and continues:

- It took three years to get rid of the glandular fever and to start feeling normal again.

That was not easy.

It is above all those who have been closest to me who have seen how much I have struggled and how hard I have trained to get back here.

Winning the British Open is a dream come true.

It is clearly the biggest victory of his career.

"Dreams come true"

The victory means that Nordqvist is now one of only three European women golfers who have won three majors.

The other two are Annika Sörenstam and the British Laura Davies.

Nordqvist actually played the first two rounds of the British Open with Davies.

- To establish oneself among the best players in the world and Europe, I am incredibly proud.

Now I have won a major in three different decades as well.

These are dreams that come true after incredibly hard work.

Nordqvist fought a hard battle for the victory with, among others, the Dane Nanna Koerstz Madsen and the Swede Madelene Sagström.

After a cup spin on the eleventh hole and hitting the water on the twelfth, she showed mental strength on the final holes.

- I felt that the Dane was quite stressed and was affected by the situation.

She struck a few blows that you might not normally see from her.

- I work a lot with my mental trainer, just to keep calm.

This is something I have improved quite a lot over the years.

Trying not to take bad punches with me.

It was a big key at eleven, I think twelve.

This is something I have worked hard on and it has not been easy.

But I notice that it makes a big difference.

Solheim Cup next

After the final victory putt, Nordqvist was embraced by her husband Kevin McAlpine.

- We had not been seen in six and a half weeks so it was incredibly fun to just see each other again.

He's a caddy on the PGA Tour this year, so I do not know how many days we have been seen, but there have not been many in the last seven months.

He's from Dundee, 20 minutes away, so his whole family and friends were there.

Now a little rest awaits at home in the US for the Swede.

Then it's time for another big competition, the Solheim Cup, where Europe will face the USA in a team competition.

- Solheim Cup has been a big goal for a very long time, she says.
