Henrik Lundqvist, 39, called a press conference earlier today and announced that he is ending his career.

The well-deserved goalkeeper was drafted by the New York Rangers in 2000 and made his debut five years later.

This was followed by 15 years of success with the club.

"It is with mixed feelings that we, New York Rangers, express our best wishes and heartfelt gratitude to Henrik Lundqvist," the club wrote on its Twitter.

"Henrik's commitment made him one of the best goalkeepers to ever practice the sport of ice hockey, and we are fortunate to have witnessed it in the first place for 15 years."

Rangers announce that his jersey number, 30, will retire and that the jersey will be hoisted to the ceiling during a match next season.

That to pay tribute to the profile.

"Henrik is, and always will be, a Ranger"
