Roger Federer has not had it easy in recent years.

The 40-year-old operated on his knee twice last year and during this year's grass season he has suffered further setbacks.

The Swiss was forced to cancel the Olympics and now he announces that he will be gone for a long time.

In consultation with doctors, the tennis legend has decided to undergo another knee operation.

- Unfortunately, I have to have surgery to get better.

I have decided to do it and I will be on crutches for many weeks and away from games for many months, he says in a video message on his Instagram.

He thus misses, among other things, the last grand slam tournament of the year: the US Open.

However, Federer says he wants to return to the ATP tour, but the question is what kind he will be in.

- It will be tough but at the same time it is the right thing to do.

Because I want to be healthy and be able to run properly again, and I want to be able to give myself some hope to be able to return to the tour in some form, he says.
