She made her national team debut 16 years ago.

Now Carli Lloyd has announced that she is resigning.

- When I started my national team career in 2005, my two main goals were to become as complete a player as possible and help the team win championships.

Every time I stepped out on the field, I played as if it was my last match, says Lloyd.

Despite making her debut as a 23-year-old, the striker managed 312 international matches for the USA, where the bronze match against Australia in the Tokyo Olympics became her last competitive international match.

Lloyd is thus one of four American women who played over 300 international matches, where only Kristine Lilly has more (354).

Hattrick in the World Cup final

The summer ended with a bronze medal, but during her three decades in the national team, she won no less than two Olympic golds and two World Cup golds.

- I have never taken anything for granted.

Especially not when I know how hard it is to get to the top, and even harder to stay there.

In total, there were 128 national team goals, three of which came within 17 minutes in the World Cup final against Japan 2015. A final USA won 5-2.

However, Lloyd will finish the season with the club team Gotham FC, a member of the National Women's Soccer League.

In addition, she will participate in four friendly matches for the United States during the autumn.
