Beach volleyball players Katja Stam and Raïsa Schoon surprisingly reached the final at the European Championships in Vienna.

The Dutch duo defeated Latvian women Tina Graudina and Anastasija Kravcenoka in three sets in the last four.

The Latvian couple, who became European champion in 2019, was fourth in the Austrian capital, while Stam and Schoon started the title tournament as number fifteen.

Stam, 22, and Schoon, three years younger, won the first set 21-15, but lost the second with the same numbers.

The all-deciding third set went to the Dutch 15-11.

Stam and Schoon, who were eliminated in the intermediate round at the Olympic Games in Tokyo two weeks ago, will compete in the final against the winner of the match between the Swiss couple Nina Betschart/Tanja Hüberli and the Germans Karla Borger and Julia Sude.

The final is scheduled for Saturday at around 5:45 PM.

Among the men, two Dutch couples are still active at the European Championships.

Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen will meet the Germans Nils Ehlers and Lukas Pfretzschner in the quarterfinals on Saturday, while Stefan Boermans/Yorick de Groot will meet the Czechs Ondrej Perusic/David Schweiner in the last eight.
