"This is a wonderful and historic day for the club, the world of football and for us," he said. "It is amazing what we tried to achieve."

During his time with Barcelona's first team, which lasted 21 years, Messi won 4 titles in the Champions League, and also won 10 titles in the Spanish League.

Messi won his first international title, after he was crowned with Argentina in the South American Cup (Copa America) last July, to lead his country to its first title in the continental competition since 1993.

Saint-Germain, who signed this summer with Moroccan Ashraf Hakimi and included free Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, Dutch Giorgenio Wijnaldum and Spaniard Sergio Ramos, is looking to regain the French League title he lost last season to Lille, before embarking on the search for his first title in the Champions League.
