The International Handball Federation (IHF) demands that women's players in beach handball wear a bikini where "the top and panties are tight".

The Norwegian national team protested against the rule and played in shorts at a European Championship match in July, which resulted in them being fined.

The Guardian now states that seven federations working for the rights of women athletes in sports have sent a letter to the IHF and the European Handball Federation (EHF).

In the letter, the unions demand that the respective chairmen of the organizations resign.

The unions include Italian Assist, which promotes and defends the rights of women athletes.

"This is an obviously sexist practice that needs to be eliminated," said Luisa Rizzitelli, president of Assist, according to The Guardian.

Unions from different countries

In addition to Assist, the French Alice Milliat Foundation and German Discover Football will also be behind the initiative.

The letter states, among other things, that the IHF and EHF have "established an embarrassing point".

Rizzitelli says that the clothing requirements should not use the woman's body.

- They (EHF and IHF) have not only ignored the immediate abolition of the rule (after the incident with Norway), but they have also confirmed the fine - that is the shame.
