The Chairman of the Basketball Organization Committee in the Gulf Cooperation Council, Vice President of the UAE Basketball Association, Abdullatif Al-Fardan, revealed that Bahrain will host the 41st Gulf Champions Club Championship, during the period from 13 to 21 May next.

Al-Fardan told "Emirates Today": "The organizing committee for basketball in the Gulf Cooperation Council decided, in its meeting that was held on the sidelines of the Gulf Junior Team Championship, which is currently being held in the Bahraini capital, Manama, that Bahrain will host the 41st edition of the Gulf Champions Club Championship, during the period From May 13 to 21, 2022.

He added: “During the meeting, a proposal was presented to return the championship to the previous system, which stipulates the participation of eight clubs, instead of limiting participation in the league champions to the Gulf countries, which was implemented in the last version in accordance with the requirements of the Asian Confederation, since the championship is eligible for Asia, especially since it was previously The proposal for the participation of eight clubs was passed to the presidency of the Continental Federation during the last 40 edition hosted by Shabab Al-Ahly Club in Dubai last June.

He explained, "We saw in Dubai acceptance by the AFC presidency, which allowed us in the Bahrain meeting to pass this proposal, as it allows an increase in the number of matches and provides more justice for all, especially in the preliminary round, which will be held in the group league system of two groups."

He added, "Returning to the old system will give the eight teams additional opportunities in the quarter-finals, especially since the preliminary results will determine the ranking of the group's teams, before completing the quarter-finals, so that the first of the two groups meets the fourth of the other group, and the second-placed with the third of the next group."

He concluded: "The Bahrain meeting was very fruitful, and we look forward to continuing to work with all the federations of the Gulf states, to serve the development of the game."
