With 39 Olympic titles won at the Tokyo Olympics, the United States maintained their dominance on the medal table, just ahead of China, for the third consecutive edition.

The Americans have won a total of 113 medals (38 golds, 41 silvers and 33 bronzes), down from the Rio Games (46 golds and 121 medals in total). 

The victory of their women's volleyball team on Sunday, however, allows them to be one unit ahead of the Chinese delegation (88 medals, 38 gold, 32 silver, 18 bronze).

58 medals for Japan

For Japan, the home effect worked very well.

The Japanese thus recorded their best record in Olympic history with 58 medals, including 27 titles!

And finish in third place on the medal table. 

For its part, with the victory of the handball players, the French delegation finished 8th and stopped at 33 medals (10 golds, 12 silver and 11 bronze), which places it below expectations - around forty medals - but at the same level than Rio in terms of gold (10 titles). During the 2016 Olympics, the French won 42 medals in total.
