The Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg is threatened with the cup after an embarrassing mistake by the new coach Mark van Bommel.

In the 3-1 after extra time at the Regional League Club Preußen Münster, van Bommel made three more changes in extra time after three changes in regular time.

However, the statutes of the German Football Association (DFB) do not allow this.

VfL did not want to comment on the incident on SID on Sunday evening.

The new coach from the Netherlands changed Josip Brekalo for Renato Steffen during the break. After an hour Maximilian Arnold came for Josuha Guilavogui and Kevin Mbabu for Lukas Nmecha. In the extension, van Bommel brought in Yannick Gerhardt for Jeremy Roussillon, Admir Mehmedi for Maximilian Philipp and Sebastiaan Bornauw for Maxence Lacroix. According to a report by Kicker, referee Christian Dingert noted the substitution error in the game report.

The implementation regulations of the DFB state that “five substitutions are possible in the coming DFB Cup season” and paragraph 31, point 3a continues as follows: “During the game, five players may be replaced.

Any additional substitution going beyond this in games with extra time is not permitted. ”It was different, for example, at the European Football Championship.

A sixth change could be made there in the event of an extension.

"I spoke to the referee"

The Wolfsburg are said to have asked the fourth official several times, according to dpa information, whether the sixth change was allowed.

Accordingly, there was no contradiction.

Van Bommel told the Bild newspaper: "I spoke to the referee about it."

Münster's manager Peter Niemeyer said: “Yes, we are aware that Wolfsburg has made six changes.

We will discuss this internally and decide whether and how we should act against it. ”Immediately after the game, no one apparently assumed a rule violation, so this was not an issue at the press conference either.

The Champions League participant would almost have been eliminated in terms of sport.

Central defender Marcel Hoffmeier scored the surprising lead after a corner for the long-time strong fourth division club (74th).

Brekalo only equaled for the disappointing cup winner from 2015 in the 90th minute.

Goalscorer Wout Weghorst (103rd) and Ridle Baku (120th + 1) scored in the heated extra time to triumph for the guests, who were disappointing over long distances.

Whipped by 6,703 spectators, the playful Prussians shook the Wolfsburg defense several times in the initial phase. However, the rebellious founding member of the Bundesliga did not get anything countable at first. The disembodied wolves found hardly any means against the courageously appearing promotion candidate from the Regionalliga West, who was in the first round of the cup for the first time in seven years. After the mishap, it is also possible to move into the second round.
