The German show jumpers left the Baji Koen Equestrian Park in a bad mood.

They clearly missed the Olympic medal they had hoped for and only came ninth on Saturday after Daniel Deußer had given up.

The rider, who lives in Rijmenam, Belgium, ended the course prematurely after a refusal with Killer Queen.

"We are of course disappointed, especially because it was still good yesterday," said national coach Otto Becker in an interview with ZDF: "We promised more." The team from Sweden secured gold in the jump-off against the US team.

Belgium secured bronze with the German coach Peter Weinberg.

The German start rider André Thieme with Chakaria started safely, but the ride of the 46-year-old from Plau am See became noticeably restless.

On the third to last jump the first pole fell, on the penultimate jump the second.

Thieme rode the eleven-year-old mare out of the course with eight penalty points.

“It started off really well,” said Thieme.

“Unfortunately we made a plan beforehand, and I stuck to it - I should have been more flexible.” The second throw was “a consequential mistake”.

I'm sorry for "my teammates".

The subsequent ride by Maurice Tebbel with Don Diarado looked better.

But even the 27-year-old from Emsbüren did not come through the course without being dropped.

With four penalty points, Tebbel rode the twelve-year-old stallion to the finish after 545 meters.

“I'm disappointed,” commented the rider.

There are “too many mistakes” by the German team.

British also with disappointment

When Daniel Deußer entered, there was even a chance for a medal. At first he looked sovereign with Killer Queen, but after a drop and subsequent refusal, the 39-year-old gave up. "It was the right decision that he gave up in the interests of the horse," said the national trainer. It is of no use that it was about "a beautifully made course," as Becker put it. It is "again a really demanding number". The course is "difficult, but fairly built".

After the disappointment in the individual competition, the team of the German Equestrian Association made it into the final with confidence, remained in the three rounds without a drop, but that didn't count in the final because all teams started from scratch.

In the individual, the show jumpers had also not received a medal before.

Deusser was the best on Wednesday only in 18th place.

One of the disappointments was the British team around individual Olympic champion Ben Maher with Explosion, who did not compete after the poor rides of the first two pairs of the team.

Great Britain was unable to replace the second best rider, Scott Brash, whose horse was injured in Tokyo and was last behind Germany.
