That was not where it would end.

Sweden, which flew through the Olympics and defeated all the teams they met, would only win against Canada in the final.

But that did not happen.

Instead, the Swedish national team fell on penalties.

- I am incredibly proud of the girls who step forward and take the penalties in this pressured situation.

I really hope that no one puts the blame on themselves, says Magdalena Eriksson.

Vänsterbacken, the everyday team captain in Chelsea, was replaced at the end of regular time and had to watch from the sidelines when the Swedish gold dream crashed.

"Not the last chance"

- We are the European team that goes the furthest and next year it will be a European Championship so I immediately start to think that this is not our last chance at a gold, says Eriksson.

The European Championship 2022, which was to be played in 2021 but was moved in connection with the Olympics being moved to this summer, is played in England.

The next international match for the Swedish team is on September 17 when they face Slovakia in the World Cup qualifiers.

It is the first match in the World Cup qualifiers for Sweden, which in addition to Slovakia has Ireland, Georgia and Finland in their group.
