The dean of Emirati basketball players, the former captain of the national team, the current center player in Al Nasr Club, Ali Al-Hattawi (43 years), confirmed the decision to retire, and explained an end to his career, which included 1,500 games, and spanned 38 years, during which he achieved remarkable achievements, both in the “white” shirt. Or the clubs he played for, represented by Al Shabab, Al Wasl and Al Nasr.

Al-Hattawi told "Emirates Today": "My decision to retire came after sitting with the management of Al-Nasr Club, and it was understood by my desire to stay away from the stadiums after a surgical operation in the shoulder. This decision came four years after my decision to retire from international football with the national team."

He added, "Retiring from playing will not keep me away from my basketball lover, as I will go to the training side, in light of the scarcity of the Emirati coach in the Emirati basketball, as their numbers do not exceed the fingers of one hand."

He explained: “My long career in basketball, which dates back to 1983, when I was five years old, the generations that I witnessed in the stadiums, and the achievements I achieved, whether with the national team, or with the clubs I played for, most notably those I achieved with Al Shabab Club. It puts me in front of the responsibility of completing the task and transferring experiences to the next generation of players, by moving to the world of training, which is witnessing a great scarcity at the level of the citizen coach, most notably the legend Abdul Hamid Ibrahim, who is inspiring me in the world of training, in his career that exceeds 40 years of giving.” .

He added, "I strongly believe that developing the Emirates basket and returning it to its normal position requires a fundamental change of an entire system. Despite these challenges and obstacles, I am keen to continue my association with the Emirates Basket, and to put my accumulated experiences in the interest of the game."

He continued: “I previously experienced the golden generation of the game, and with the team achieved the titles of the Gulf championships, before I headed in 2016 to the decision to retire, and to make room for young elements to occupy a central position in the team, but I am convinced that the decline of the Emirates basket is due to a major defect in the entire sports system, Which I mentioned 20 years ago, that the last place in the Gulf is what awaits us in the coming days, in expectations that have already occurred, in light of sports systems in the Gulf countries, which have developed strategies that succeeded in developing the basketball teams in their countries, in exchange for at least a few for the Emirates basket. in its place".
