The German gold series in equestrian sport in Tokyo is broken.

Daniel Deußer failed early in the individual show jumping Olympic final and made the German rider delegation look disappointed on Wednesday.

With eight penalty points, the 39-year-old in the saddle of Killer Queen clearly missed the jump-off for the medals and only came in 18th. The team competition remains the last hope.

“That is of course disappointing,” said delegation leader Dennis Peiler.

"It shouldn't be today, but we certainly had hoped for more," said the sports director of the German Equestrian Association.

Deusser was the only rider of the German team to have reached the final of the top 30, but with his eleven-year-old mare he lacked the usual aplomb.

The poles rattled early on in the course before Hesse, who lives in Rijmenam, Belgium, had to accept two drops.

The 2014 World Cup winner, who was born in Wiesbaden, was one of the big favorites as the world number one.

However, Deußer had to do without his top horse Tobago in Tokyo and saddled Killer Queen.

André Thieme from Plau am See and Christian Kukuk from Riesenbeck kept their fingers crossed in vain on Wednesday.

The Olympic debutants had already received a drop with their horses Chakaria and Mumbai in the qualification and had to watch the final.

One of the two riders will probably not experience another Olympic ride in Tokyo.

For the German show jumpers there is another chance for a medal in the team competition on Friday (12 noon) and Saturday (12 noon in the FAZ live ticker for the Olympics and on ARD / ZDF and Eurosport), but only one trio is allowed to start.

Deußer is also considered to be set, as is Maurice Tebbel.

The 27-year-old from Emsbüren was not nominated for the individual by the national trainer with the stallion Don Diarado, but was assured of his starting place in the team competition.

If it were after the appearance in the individual qualification on Tuesday, Thieme should only be a spectator at the team jumping.

"Now it's time to lick the wounds first and then concentrate on the team competition," said Equestrian Delegation Head Peiler.

The final decision on the composition of the trio will be made by Becker on Thursday.

All horses still have to pass the constitutional examination, during which veterinarians check their fitness.
